Winning back his name was hardest of all

Winning back his name was hardest of all. Removing every trace of the taint would be impossible. Stories persist on the Internet. Once, a date told him she had Googled him, and he had to explain.

Leiderman, one of his defense lawyers, thought it was not enough that the government dropped charges. He wanted the criminal justice system to recognize Gonzalez's innocence affirmatively.

There is such a thing as a declaration of factual innocence, he explained to Gonzalez. A judge can grant it. It is exceedingly rare — so rare that many cops and lawyers go a career without seeing one. It means not just that prosecutors couldn't make a case against you, but that you didn't do the crime.

The case remained on the docket of Ventura County Superior Court Judge Patricia Murphy, who had earlier ordered Gonzalez held without bail. Leiderman petitioned the judge, trying not to get his client's hopes up. He laid out the case, pointing out the holes in West's story and the numerous alibi witnesses.

Prosecutors did not want Gonzalez declared innocent. They knew a jury wouldn't convict him but said they couldn't be positive of his innocence. James Ellison, Ventura County's chief assistant district attorney, later explained their reasoning: The attack West described was "improbable, but it wasn't physically impossible."

In January 2009, nearly a year after Gonzalez's arrest, Leiderman called him excitedly: The judge had sided with them. Gonzalez was soon holding a certified copy of the judge's order declaring him factually innocent.

He drove to the bank and put it in a safe-deposit box. He figured he would need it if he wanted to continue in banking, where the blot on his record would otherwise scare off future employers. It would help in his fight to win custody of his son. But it hardly made him whole. It made it even more illogical, in his view, that West was free.

Guests at the Coutts Museum of Art Brown Bag

Guests at the Coutts Museum of Art Brown Bag Tuesday got a look at the newly remodeled museum, as well as a look at the Paint America exhibit now on display and some insight into what to look for in art.

“The first of the year we started a major renovation project,” said Rod Seel, Coutts director.
That encompassed all three floors of the museum, including painting, putting in wood floors and new lighting.

They also added an elevator and new stairway to all of the floors.
“A lot of people could never get up to the third floor,” he said, adding that it also was difficult to move heavy artwork between floors.

“We lost of lot of storage space, but the end result has been really good,” he said.
He also said they ended up with more wall space to hang exhibits than he thought they would have.

That wall space is now filled with 150 paintings that are part of the Paint America Top 100 Exhibit. That includes the 100 full-size paintings and then another 50 smaller paintings.

Seel explained the origins of Paint America, which he started in 2005.
He was semi-retired from his marketing job and after working to bring the Arts For the Parks national show to a gallery in Topeka, he decided to start his own national exhibit, Paint America Top 100.

“The process of working with them and doing that show gave me the idea to start this,” Seel said. “It took off really well.”

The show starts with a competition among national artists to be juried into the exhibit. That is about a six-month process. After he announced the winners that first year, the very next week it was announced the coordinators were shutting down Arts For the Parks.

Seel said he received several calls to take that exhibit over but he had his hands full with his new show.

As the week went on, he kept getting more calls about it.
“I gave it some thought and decided to take over the concept of Arts For the Parks,” Seel said, adding that the organizers of Arts For the Parks were trying to sell the show and everything that went along with it for $1 million.

Last September I drove dad to the golf course

Last September I drove dad to the golf course that we had played for years. Pop could hardly walk and couldn't communicate anymore. I helped him in the cart. "We" played three holes. I would hit shots and ask my dad what I should hit next. I'd ask him if he thought an 8 iron would be the right club and he'd smile and shake his head yes. I'd ask him if he wanted to hit a shot and he'd smile and shake his head no. We were on the course for thirty minutes. It was our "final round" and our best one.

Runner-Up was Craig Britter from Utah. Below is an excerpt from his entry:
I was four years old. We walked our 9 hole course and dad carried both his and my bag the whole way. We shared a bag of chocolate licorice, which i thought was a great treat. When I duffed a shot he would say "that's OK have another piece of licorice." I do remember hitting one solid shot that day on the 8th hole from the fairway right in front of the green. My dad was so excited for me that he gave me a high five and a hug. It was a special day and I like to recall that feeling in that moment every time I walk up that hole.

Rounding out the top five entries were James Carrochhi from North Carolina, Jordan Ruberti from Vermont and Paige-Lee Garris from Florida. For the grand prize winning entry, Mr. Neureuther received the Revolver Pro cart bag and T-700 travel covers. Runner-up Mr. Britter received the new Quad four-wheeled push cart by Bag Boy. The other top-five winners received Revolver Pro cart bag, T-700 travel cover and shoe bag.

A total of 25 winners were selected to receive Bag Boy prizes along with their fathers.

“The number of entries we received for the contest was overwhelming,” said Craig Ramsbottom, president Dynamic Brands. “Our panel of judges read every entry, some brought laughter and some tears. But one thing they all had in common was that golf created a true bond between them. The memories submitted are clearly ones that each son or daughter will hold onto for the rest of their life.

Marando managed to put the suspect in a headlock

Marando managed to put the suspect in a headlock, then discovered his left ankle “hanging in a 45-degree angle caused by broken bones sustained in this attack,” police said. Despite excruciating pain, Marando managed to hold on to the suspect until backup arrived, police said.

Yesterday, Marando and two other officers were responding to a 911 call from a woman reporting that her boyfriend, Tyrone Cummings, 25, had assaulted her and was threatening to kill her, the commissioner said.

When the officers arrived, Cummings was outside with a woman believed to be the victim’s sister and allegedly opened fire on them, hitting Marando, Davis said. Marando and another officer, whose name was not released, fired back, hitting Cummings “multiple times,” Davis said.

The suspect was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he was in stable condition, police said. The woman was shot in the leg and taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, police said. She was also in stable condition.

Police and the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting, including who shot the woman, Davis said. One of the shots also hit the nearby Emily A. Fifield Elementary School, he said, but it was closed at the time.

Cummings is known to police and is expected to be arraigned from his hospital bed today on charges of assault with intent to murder and weapons charges, police said. Two guns and a bag of ammunition were found on him outside the triple-decker, where police had been called previously, Davis said.

“We know he brought two illegal firearms and a bag full of bullets,” District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said. “The officers appear to have acted in self-defense. There is no question Mr. Cummings initiated (the) gunfight.”
